Calm Births

EMILY ROSE

PARENTS:
Marie and Lee
BIRTH DATE:
May 2, 1999
BIRTH WEIGHT:
4 lbs 4 oz

Marie's Experience
Marie, a 37-year old woman with many medical problems when she became pregnant, had prayed for a child in spite of the fact that it seemed impossible for her to conceive. If she did conceive, she was warned, it would be unlikely that the fetus would develop; and if it was born, it might have serious health problems. When she did become pregnant her doctor encouraged her to terminate the pregnancy. She refused. She was referred to the Calm Birth program both because Marie expressed interest in meditation and because her OB doctor thought it might help the pregnancy in several ways. Marie took to doing the Calm Birth practices for several hours a day. She and her husband Lee were exemplary in their commitment to the practices. Marie became a teacher in the program and helped many women give birth with Womb Breathing.

EXCERPTS FROM POSTNATAL INTERVIEW WITH MARIE AND LEE

Marie: Listening to the Calm Birth cd is like listening to your favorite music. Because it’s something you’re familiar with you can relax and it calms you sooner than if you’re doing it yourself.

Lee: The Calm Birth methods helped us get closer. And they helped us get closer to our child. The practices helped us with our emotional needs. Tension, fear and frustration come up sometimes. The Calm Birth practices helped us deal with it and realize that this life is a miracle.

Marie: It was a short and easy labor…but there were times when the pain would get bad enough so that I’d forget the Womb Breathing. They had me pant like a puppy, and I found that made me feel like I was hyperventilating. Then the Womb Breathing came back to me and that really helped me through labor immensely.
