Calm Birth

"I wholeheartedly endorse the Calm Birth program. This work is at the heart of healthy and empowering childbirth - an experience which has the power to transform and uplift a woman's relationship to her body and her child for life. Calm Birth is preventive and empowering medicine at its best."

About Calm Birth
Changes in the field of medicine have encouraged the development of new childbirth methods. The Calm Birth program is based in mind/body medicine and meditation science. It is modeled on the medicine-meditation program of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in pain management and immune enhancement. Our program offers three proven meditation practices applied to childbirth for the first time. The trainings were started in 1998 in Southern Oregon hospitals, and are presently being offered in various locations and hospitals in the USA. More than 100 training seminars have been presented in hospitals since 1998, all with education credits from the California Board of Nursing. The program has been presented three times at world congresses of the Association of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health, the University of Michigan Medical School, Bastyr University, and is currently active in New Jersey hospitals. More than 5000 children have been born with the method.

The book, Calm Birth New Method for Conscious Childbirth, was published by North Atlantic Books in 10/05 and is distributed internationally by Random House with the Calm Birth cd.

We offer all-day introductory seminars and three day teacher trainings.

Calm Birth prenatal classes focus on the use of three meditation practices and teach women how to use their innate healing abilities. The program encourages natural childbirth, however, the practices are especially beneficial when medical interventions are used during childbirth. If medical interventions are used, the method works with current childbirth medicine to raise the quality of the birth and heal any side effects. The classes teach expanded childbirth anatomy, incorporating the inseparable physical body and energy body. Women learn to breathe with both bodies throughout their birthing process. Using the practices they achieve healing and greater function in giving birth.

We teach concepts not addressed by conventional childbirth education:

1. Nervous system healing

2. Immune system enhancement

3. A new model of the birthing woman's body and potential

4. Proven research on the biological and psychological benefits of childbirth meditation.

The Calm Birth postnatal care program is called Calm Mother. It offers 5 practices for healing and restoring optimal function, to enhance breastfeeding and parenting after giving birth.

"Calm Birth is the childbirth method that society and I have waited for. It's been a long time coming, a very long time. I am a midwife and an educator, with a steady devotion to childbirth. I urge everyone to buy Robert Newman's inspired book...It does what is so deeply needed. It heals the Earth by healing birth."

Jeannine Parvati Baker, childbirth educator and midwife author of Prenatal Yoga and Natural Childbirth and Conscious Conception

From: Introduction to Calm Birth
by David Chamberlain, Ph.D.

". . . Calm Birth gives women and birth professionals practical means to improve the quality of childbirth. Like the venerable educational programs inspired by Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, Dr. Fernand Lamaze, and Dr. Robert Bradley, Calm Birth seeks to empower women for natural childbirth and offers ideas and practical methods for them to succeed. Like the previous programs, Calm Birth recognizes the central challenge posed by fear and pain, though its solution is different, and it recognizes the importance of breathing, though it teaches a form of blended breathing into both the energy body and the physical body, reflecting a new vision of childbirth anatomy and potential. "

"Calm Birth raises urgent questions about the mental and emotional quality of birth today and offers well-tested methods to help mothers take more responsibility for themselves and their babies. The prospect of reducing complications while increasing maternal feelings of dignity and triumph should warm the hearts of all birth attendants.Calm Birth will help parents to see pregnancy as a master path, an opportunity to support fuller development of their own babies, and perhaps to provide them with the ultimate opportunity to give human evolution a boost in the right direction."

Dr. Chamberlain is the former president of the Association of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH), an international association of childbirth professionals. He is the author of more than 50 publications including the book The Mind of Your Newborn Baby, now in its 3rd edition in 10 languages.
